Heart Scans

Heart scans provide images of the arteries in your heart. Doctors use heart scans to see if there is signs of calcium in the coronary arteries leading to blockages. The result of such a test is often called a coronary calcium score.
Heart scans also inform if you have a higher risk of having a heart attack or other problems before you have the typical symptoms of heart disease . Heart scans use noninvasive techniques to measure the amount of calcium present in the walls of your coronary arteries which could indicate you have coronary artery disease.
The use of heart scans has been controversial. Heart scans may not be recommended for you if, based on your family history and risk factors, you fall into a very low or high risk category for having a heart attack. There are clear guidelines to assess if a heart scan may be useful in determining whether you need to take steps to prevent a heart attack within a couple of years.
